When You Own All The Oil, You Have Lots of Cars

I first heard about Brunei and their enormous wealth few years ago when the circuit from this country was included in Formula 1. Since then I’ve allways been on the lookout for pics of the Sultan’s (brother’s/son’s) massive car collection. The collection is stored among five aircraft hangars near the palace and is closely guarded.

Each marque of vehicle is serviced by its respective technicians, who are flown in to perform maintenance and repairs. A full-time staff administers the collection overall: washing, checking tire pressures, charging batteries, maintaining insurance and other documentation, etc. Senior personnel are paid as much as $210,000 US per year (tax free in Brunei, of course). One staffer was quoted as saying that the collection is so vast, “it can take an hour and a half just to get a certain car out if it’s been parked right at the back.” The collection was, at one point, valued at almost $4 billion US. $4 billion? What’s he drive?
Well, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, over 500 Rolls-Royces (the largest collection of its kind alone). The Sultan’s family has been credited with purchasing almost half of all of the Rolls-Royces manufactured during the 1990’s. As for other production models, he owns eight McLaren F1 passenger cars. Over 500 Mercedes-Benz’s. Almost 400 Ferrari’s and Bentley’s…. over 150 Jaguars and Porsches….
Over and above the production and race cars, there are some bespoke cars – custom, one-off vehicles created for the Sultan, either as gifts to him by the various automakers, or under his commission, or simply, concept cars.
I thought it would be cool to make an gallery of them and share them with all of you. I won’t be uploading my picture’s all in once, because the collection is enormous - over 5000 exotic cars and it takes quite some time to find out the correct names of each model (esp. with the Aston Martin’s/Bentley’s/Rolls Royce’s) and to upload them. I’ve just uploaded pics of the Aston’s and Bentley’s. I will have quite a busy week, so I’m not sure when I’m going to proces the rest of the pics.
The collection will be here.
