“Check” traditions

It’s an honor to study in the Czech Republic, being part of local culture, share the traditions, but sometimes I don’t clearly understand their traditions and customs. I really adore Christmas atmosphere, decoration, snow, good mood, nice people in public transportation and how every employee of different shops, banks, post offices wishes me “Veselé Vánoce”. It’s a pity that I am already out of the Czech Republic and I didn’t have the chance to enjoy the streets of snow and how Czechs really enjoy staying in queues for Christmas presents . Speaking about customs and traditions, is it there somebody who is able to explain me the tradition of staying in the queues for at least 30 minutes, when outside is -10C and to buy carp? I like carp, but I don’t like freezing in the queue . Before leaving Prague I have visited 5 places where authorized people were selling fish. Everybody were selling dead fish :- )!!! , so what’s the sense of buying dead fish, cleaning it at home, putting some salt and frosting it for 2 days? Come on friends, go to Cesco, ohh sorry to Tesco and buy how much fish you want whenever you want without freezing in the queue….or maybe you enjoy them .

In United States of Moldova everything is OK, a lot of snow and no queues in the shops, not because we don’t have money for presents, or we don’t like carp , it’s just we celebrate Christmas (Crăciunul ) on the 7th of January. Until then wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Living in Prague is like an American Dream, you can do whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do with whom you want. Prague is known worldwide for the quality of its beer, some visitors are surprised to discover that Prague also has a thriving a marijuana culture. Prague has the potion of happiness: no guns, lots of beer and lots of weed.

The Czech government has tried to address that status of marijuana multiple times, as the drug has a murky legal standing.
Marijuana legalization bills have been introduced in parliament four times in the past twenty years. In February 2007, a law was passed making marijuana farming within one’s home legal, but made it illegal to sell or share the substance. In terms of possession, the law states you can carry a small amount, a quantity determined by the officer who catches you. If you are a foreign citizen to become a part of marijuana’s culture on the Wenceslas Square is really not a problem. Prosecution of casual use is almost non-existent, which is why you can see people lighting up joints casually in bars across the country. Marijuana in the Czech Republic is not just a young person’s drug.

To witness the marijuana culture in action, the first place one might look in Prague is just minutes away from the biggest tourist attractions of Prague. Their positions never change, no matter how many days you return. It costs 250 crowns ($12.60) for just over a gram and although it is a spot to buy marijuana, it is not a spot that is necessarily conducive to smoking it. Though the quality is rumored to be no more then mediocre and the bags tend to contain less than a gram. The main change during this year in this culture was migration of legally brokers from Hlavní nádraží (Main railway station) to their original places around the corner from the Astronomical Clock, and everywhere on the Wenceslas Square.

The year 2007 is almost leaving us, streets are full of snow, people really enjoy staying in queues for Christmas presents, Santa is on his way from Kyrgyzstan and also is time to complete together with the most active members of MD community in PRG the main financial statements. As it was expected everybody came without pencils, papers and scientific calculators and again we were in the situation of doing nothing just to analyze the benefits of the Lisbon agreement, tasting the Australian beer and some bloody Irish whisky. At least Axik as a loyal consumer of that brand received some gifts.

As agreed we are meeting at 20:00 at Vlad’s place in order to “fill in” all the financial statements for the year 2007 .
BTW. those police cars were not following us ,they were hurrying to save some spare parts for their Felicias from Auto Jarov which was burning and I know who is guilty for this:

Maybe you remember the post Where is the mistake? which was written 4 months ago. Can you believe, finally after 4 months!!!our lovely ČSOB Banka solved my problem “Server Error in ‘/’ Application”. Below you can find the email from Specialista Jan Vecek.

De ce ne-am întâlnit? Pentru a face cunoştinţă cu studenţii şi a se cunoaşte studenţii între ei (nota redacţiei: totuşi urmează data viitoare să ne cunoaştem mai bine), pentru că am discutat problemele existente şi posibilitatea Ambasadei de a se implica în rezolvarea lor, pentru ca nu am fost atât de mulţi acolo şi ar pe viitor alături de şeful nostru’ – Sergiu Leahomschi ar trebui să fim mai uniţi.
Din numele tuturor studenţilor mulţumim organizatorilor (în special secretarului III ) pentru efort, iniţiativă şi aşteptăm o nouă întâlnire.

Battle of White Mountain recontruction

This weekend, September 15 and 16, Czechs remind one event that happened in 1620 on a hillside just outside Prague and that every Czech student has learned in detail, the Battle of White Mountain. This battle actually happened in November, but the tradition is to reconstruct it earlier, probably because it’s warmer now. The Battle of White Mountain was a battle where protestant Bohemian Estates’ army was defeated by catholic Hapsburg army. The aim of the reconstruction is to resemble the real event as much as possible. After all, this was more interesting than seeing a historical war movie in TV.

Whereas in the original battle, up to 50 thousands soldiers fought, this time, few hundreds of soldiers and dozens of horse riders and cannons were struggling, all in period costumes for an hour (the real battle last only 2 hours). All these was accompanied with a traditional market, musicians, dancers, performances and shows of live style and training of common soldiers, etc. It was even possible to try to wear armour, or practice shooting on a target. The event took place on a flat plain near Obora Hvezda.

Pražské metro (v divné pražštině Krtek) je několik děr do zeměkoule. V těchto dírách se pohybují takové rychlejší šaliny.

Pražské Metro má 4 linky, jejíchž trasa záleží na primátorovi:

Linka A jezdí z Depa Hostivař na LKPR přes Prahu 666. Vlaky normálního věku. O povodních 2002 nahrazena 23.
Stanice: Sklad vlaků zapalhosta / Sralka / Bububu / Želva / Fauna / Poděbradskýho Jirky / Náměstí války (konečná o povodních nebo po sebevraždě) / Muzeum – přestup na kovošrot / Můstek – přestup na zbrusunový vlak / Staré city square / Velkostranská / U hradu / Dej více.

Linka B Jezdí z Gottwaldova na Černý Most, každý druhý vlak jede Nové Butovice – Českomoravská, každý třetí Florenc – Smíchovské nádraží, každý osmý Zličín – Smíchovský nádraží, každý dvanáctý ve špičce pracovního dne o přestupním roce ve směru Florenc – Rajská Zahrada. Na předaleké okolí Prahy (Brno) jezdí málokdo (chátra, Moravané) a stojí to hodně vozokm. Oficiální důvod je potřeba přeplnit vlaky. Zbrusunové vlaky 71-81 se suprovým zabezpečovačem METPO-1961. Strojvedoucí nic nedělá. Úsek Smíchov – Karlín pokryt linkou 3, úsek Černý Most posílením autobusů. Více na X-B.

Linka C jezdí z Proseku až někam do háje. Až vás tam někdo pošle, doporučuji jet na konečnou. Jezdí na ní takové vlaky vypůjčené z muzea. O povodních nahrazena linkou X-C, která nejezdila(tvořena 6 jinými linkami)

Linka D je neznámá – prý z centra kamsi na Modřany nebo Barrandov.

Linka H vede z Běchovic do Dubče, značena je hnědou barvou. Je budována pod zemí; většina stanic je bohatě vyzdobena; mají někdy i tři výstupy. V provozu jsou až osmivozové soupravy. Má to však jeden háček; většině pražanů je na hovno.

Where is the mistake?

4 days since I am trying to make an outgoing non documentary payment by Internet banking, but unsuccessfully. At the beginning I thought the problem is, that I don’t have a valid certificate for this website ib24.csob.cz. After installing it, the same problem “Server Error”. Next try was to turn off Kaspersky – same sh*t. Even Firefox didn’t help me. I have tried from 5 different computers, but the same thing.

Monday, 6th of August – the last day I can send the payment. Let’s try again Internet banking – no, same answer “Server Error”. So let’s write an e-mail to our friendly HELP desk from CSOB. After 5 hours waiting for no answer, I have decided to go to the nearest branch of CSOB – Bila Trida. So:

Ion: Dobry den, potrebuji poradit ohledne Internet bankingu (Good afternoon, need some help regarding Internet banking)
Very nice lady with no clue of what I am saying: Ano, ale tady s tim Vam nepomuzu, nebo vite co ja Vas pripojim na vedlejsi prepazku. (Yes, but I cannot help you with this, better I will connect you to the next desk)

Ion: Dobry den, potrebuji poradit ohledne internet bankingu (Good afternoon, need some help regarding Internet banking)
Very fresh graduate of VSE: hmm…nebylo by to lepsi zavolat na Help Desk. (hmm…I think it will be better to call the Help Desk center)

Ion: muzu anglicky pro lepsi vyjadreni…(may I speak English for better explanation…)
Help desk: yes, of course…
Ion: I am trying for 4 days to make an outgoing non documentary payment by Internet banking…..but it says that there is an internal error on server.
Help desk: ohh really, it is not possible, send us an e-mail with a “Prnt Scrn View” and we will solve the problem immediately.
Ion: how come, I have already sent you 2 e-mails 5 hours ago…
Help desk: ohh it is not possible, but let me check, or yes really, we appologize for this delay, but we don’t know by whom this problem is caused. We will let you know during this week when we will solve this problem.

Come on, I think it is not normal that a bank like CSOB communicate in this way, anyway if you have some advices, some sollutions, let them know .

Czech banks are not perfect.
