This post is dedicated to the Facebook groups Every time I go to IKEA I steal the little wooden pencils! and Vrem IKEA la Durlesti

The article is written after my first purchase at IKEA Stockholm, Kugens Kurva (biggest IKEA store in the world, kind of…they haven’t seen yet the Stejaurul factory outlet in Chişinău ).

IKEA is seen by many as the happiest place on Earth. I have even applied for a happy job in Älmhult (living room of Mr. Ingvar Kamprad). After being recruited as a supply planner and seeing my happy salary I have decided to leave immediately – I guess I am not mature enough to understand that happiness is not only about salary

IKEA is said to have been derived from I-Kill-Y(e)A due to the furniture’s ability to cause heart arrest in people who like popcorn. IKEA makes and sell flat-pack furniture but due to restrictions in the law in many nations are unable to deliver. Many people get around this by driving Volvo station wagons to IKEA and filling them to the brim with gaudy plastic tat made by Lars Larsson and Per Persson and as well Fredrick Fredricksson.

Three geeks getting excited over an IKEA catalog

Nevertheless what better way to spend Saturdays then by carrying a wardrobe through a car park or enjoying a meal of meatballs. IKEA is also a great place to spot the elusive argumentative couple, who can usually be found arguing over lamp shades and the right to bear arms. It has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the reason for 50% of modern marriages ending in divorce is because those people try to go to IKEA together for a relaxing afternoon.

IKEA self-assembly furniture is made of balsa wood and comes with a small metal key. Instructions are usually of the standard “insert flange A into sprocket ZB-5001C” type. Unfortunately, the instructions are written in Japanese (not English or Swedish, contrary to popular belief), translated to Bulgarian, THEN Swedish, then German, Portuguese and finally Esperanto before being translated into English eaten by a grue. Fun stuff :).

Many Swedes have been banned from IKEA and taken to court for not returning the pencils that are given at the start to help fill in order forms. This created a new sport, which has not been officially named yet, where the participants run into IKEA and attempt to escape without either being caught or purchasing the popular KRAPP piece of furniture.

All of the items featured in IKEA are made with product specifications such as: they are 5 cm too big to fit into a car boot, they are missing at least one vital construction piece, the person who wrote the instructions thought it would be funny to include pictures of other instruction manuals.

IKEA was founded by the Swede Ingvar Kamprad, despite the chronic lack of style in design so typical of the Swedes. The only thing that mattered was supply chain management, namely persuading people to buy stuff directly from a warehouse.

Some tips about your shopping at IKEA:

# Having decided on which of the billions of items sold by IKEA it is that you wish to buy, you will need to visit your local store, which is probably at least 80 Swedish miles away -~800KM.

# Take a pair of binoculars with you, because your item will be on the top shelf of a 70 meters high metal rack.

# Once you have located it, spend another hour attempting to locate a member of staff. They will tell you that, very shortly, a man will come with a ladder and get it down for you. The man will never come :).

Some importants facts about IKEA:

# The royal residence of the Swedish king has only furniture from IKEA.

# Where else can you get meals for 15 SEK in Sweden (25 MLD)? At least at IKEA Korvkiosk.

# IKEA names the furniture after the child labourer who designed and constructed it.

# Apple is suing IKEA over the Apple iKea

Now I guess you are curious, what item I bought from IKEA :

Hello,

we are couple from US and intend to spend Christmas in Sweden and would like to book a double room in your hotel. We are planning to stay in Stockholm for one week (seven nights), however will be travelling around. Could you please let us know the price for a double room for this period?

Also we will be travelling around Sweden and would welcome any advice on the places to see.
Well you know, we all in US love Swedish chocolate and your watches are great, and the cheese is really tasty! It would be most interesting to go around to see the Alps and normally the violet cows, which are one of the number one associations with your fine country!

Thank you in advance for your kind answer,
Ion Ciorici.

I think you mean Switzerland when you write of cows and Alps. We are in Sweden – the big, lovely country in northern Europe. We do not have violet cows, cheese or chocolate, but Stockholm is a beautiful city to spend the holidays. And the surroundings are beautiful too – with the archipelago and breathtaking scenery.
Please let us know if you are interested to come to Sweden and which date you would be interested to stay in Stockholm and we will send you an offer.
Best regards from Stockholm, SWEDEN

**********************

Dear Mr. Ciorici,
I think there is a littel mistake Stockholm is in Sweden not in Switzerland. Alltought we can offer you the room but we need the date of arrivial and departure.
For any questions we will be glad to assist you.
Kind regards!

**********************

Dear Ciorici,
Thank you very much for your inquiry and your interest shown in the Grand Hotel. In order to offer any rates I do need the exact dates due to our rates can change daily.
Concerning the supporting program I think you interchange the countries Sweden and Switzerland – we do have any Alps or Violet cows around.
Kind regards,

**********************

Dear Sir,
thank you for your kind E-Mail.
Before sending you an offer for your inquiry I would kindly let you know that the atraction – Alps and violet cows and normally the good chocolate – are in Switzerland.

Plese confirm that you have planed to visit Sweden in Northern Europe and not Switzerland.
Wishing you a nice day we beg to remain
With kind regards from Stockholm, Sweden (Northern Europe)

**********************

Dear Mr Ciorici
Thank you for your email.
We are sorry, but please check if you really like to stay with us. In Sweden there are no violet cows, there is no cheese and no Alps.
Please get back to us if you really like to stay in Stockholm and not in Switzerland.
Kind regards

**********************

Dear Mr. Ciorici!
If you like to come to Sweden and stay in our hotel we would be pleased to welcome you.
But if you like to see violet cows and Alps you have to travel a few thousand miles more, then you are in Switzerland (small rich country).
Switzerland = Central Europe (next to Germany, Italy, ..)
Sweden = Northern Europe (big country far away from US)
Best regards

The Volvo Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three years. It is named after its current owner, Volvo.

Though the route is changed to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs Europe in September or October, and in recent years has had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races at many of the stopover cities. The current race started in Alicante, Spain, on October 11, 2008. The route for the 2008-2009 race has been altered from previous years to include stopovers in the Middle East and Asia for the first time. Below are the pictures from Stockholm stopover:

I assume approx. 10 million people everyday in Sweden are considering the idea how to avoid and if possible to escape not paying incredible high taxes in order to survive from the salary – which basically after the tax deduction looks like a student scholarship .

Why not joining the ARMY*? Army is cool and is like a big parade ! If you join the army and become a Scout Trooper, you get paid, you get a cool gun and of course you don’t pay tax!

You get free training, free food, free accommodation, and a free funeral (how encouraging) for the entire period of your service, and a military pension afterwards (if you don’t die).

You can then spend the rest of your life with two cats and talking about the huge sacrifice you made to your country. You also get to tell civilians that you know more than they possibly can about the complexities of defence policy. You can also make fun of the Navy because they are a bunch of pansies who have it so much easier than you, (because the Navy is for pansies)

So how about to become a Scout Trooper :

As you can I was trying to avoid taxes as well in Denmark and Norway

*The term ARMY is a backwards acronym for Yes. My. Retarded. Ass. or Aren’t Ready to be Marines Yet. This term ARMY is also known as the ASSKICKERS – a large collection of brave men (but not brave enough), women and others who defend any country from such hazards as “armies” which are evil organizations of trained killers which exist in foreign countries.

…or just go clubbing.

Going out in the evening Stockholm is a strange affair. There are about a hundred little rules one must be aware of in this image-fixated city.

First important thing to remember is this: you are how you present yourself. This goes for clubs in the bohemian part of town as well as chic Östermalm. How you present yourself dictates everything from how people on the street will size you up to how snooty the guy in the 7-Eleven store will treat you. Read on and you’ll get it.

Regarding transportation:

How you get to a club doesn’t always matter, as they’re often located in a district where there are clubs everywhere and people just walk between them throughout the night. Some clubs however require a certain something upon arrival. For example, pulling up to Spy Bar in a cab filled with 8 people just won’t fly. A VIP club like that has a (if arriving by taxi) 2-3 person limit per cab. Pulling up in a limo with 10 people on the other hand is fine.
This is of course taking the whole transportation bit to the extreme but you get the drift.

Regarding the doormen:

One thing to always remember is that the doormen at clubs seriously mean business in this town, and they have no self perspective whatsoever. This is where the humor part comes in. Always let them have their power-trip and laugh about it with your friends over drinks inside. Getting into clubs in Stockholm has pretty much become as tough as getting through New York airport security. So don’t be drunk, and if the doorman tells you you’re an idiot then just agree . He’s just looking for an excuse to keep you out from all the fun.

Also remember that a mean doorman doesn’t necessarily mean a fabulous party inside, which is what many people seem to think. It all comes down to what your goal for the evening is. In general, the meaner the doorman, the more scantly dressed women and men inside, and a relaxed doorman often means a relaxed atmosphere inside.

Another thing to avoid when it comes to doormen is name-dropping. Telling him you know the princess Magdalena or the King won’t get you inside any faster. Honestly, the likeliness of him even knowing who either of them are, are slim to none.

Regarding dresscodes and stuff:

Many places in town don’t have an official dresscode, but still refuse people entry when dressed improperly. This is of course far from fair but that’s the way it is. So here are a few things to keep in mind when dressing to go out on the town.

The south side, Södermalm, has the least pretensions when it comes to clothes. Sneakers, jeans and a t-shirt are considered OK even if they’re not plastered with brand names like Gucci, Prada or D&G.
If you ask anybody if they’ve spent any time at all in front of the mirror preparing their ensemble they’ll lie and tell you of course not, but that’s part of the Stockholm charm!

The east side, Östermalm, with the chic uppety clubs takes clothes to another level. Sneakers will probably get you stopped at the door, so wear something a bit fancier. Same goes for jeans if they’re not fancy label material.
The bottom line is basically that the party clubs are meant to be enjoyed by nicely dressed people with a nicely filled wallet, and the bohemian clubs are a bit cheaper and more relaxed and people dress as such.

Regarding ordering drinks and tipping:

When you’ve finally made it through the hassle of actually getting into the club the next obstacle appears, namely ordering drinks. Basically waving money or yelling at the bartender will be ignored by bartender until you stop. Just standing around, looking politely at the closest bartender will get you the best service. If you’ve got the confidence, a little flirting can get you a long way also.

Tipping isn’t a necessity but it might get you a couple shots at a cheaper price later in the evening. Another thing to keep in mind is that coins in general are frowned upon, so keep the bills at hand. If you do receive a couple coins as change when buying a drink then just leave them at the bar. Scrambling for öre is considered pretty cheap.

Stockholm flirtation etiquette :

So you’ve gotten in, you’ve got your drink, the music is great but now what? Everybody wants some love so here are few tips to keep in mind when venturing into the jungle of Picking Someone Up.

The rules of flirtation are pretty universal. Start by scoping out the potential victim and see if the eye contact seems to be of the appreciative or the “leave me alone” variety before heading over for a chat. If appreciation is sensed then step two is in order. Step two consists of starting up some easy conversation, and NOT over-the-top compliments . The person already knows you’re attracted to them, so save the massive compliments for when you’ve at least spent a few moments together.

After that you’re on your own. Either you’ve got it in the bag or you’ll be left with your drink alone on the dance floor. Keep in mind that buying somebody a drink in Stockholm doesn’t mean a thing to most people. Some people will politely decline so as not to give the wrong impression, but most will take the drink, say thanks and then hook back up with their friends in 2 seconds if they’re not interested.

When the party’s over:

MAAAAAAAX –

Now go out, have fun and be safe, because Stockholm is a great town to party in.

When you want to rent an apartment even in Botswana you just simple go to the owner of the apartment, sign some paper, give some cash and freely you can move in right the next day.
In Sweden ….oh oh…crazy…it is like you marry the apartment .

To manage to find an apartment in Stockholm, convince the owner that you are the right person, convince the owner of the whole building, convince the district, where the apartment is located is not an easy thing – it is like you are trying to convince the nation that you are the right president.

First let me start out by saying that this article is not designed to be critical . One thing above all should be stressed: There is an acute shortage of rental accommodation not only in Stockholm, but in every Swedish city.

An article written by a Swede in Stockholm describes that “moving every month, living illegally, and paying double the actual rent” is normal in Sweden in order to have somewhere to live.

Sweden’s rarely mentioned dark underbelly is the rental property market where large sums of cash change hands daily in exchange for rental contracts.
Housing shortages are caused by three factors:

A. Rental levels and rent increases are tightly controlled

B. The rent for an apartment is based on it’s ‘use‘ above all else and not it’s location. The word ‘Use’ in this context can usually be interpreted as the apartment’s size. So an apartment will probably cost the same to rent whether it’s in central Stockholm or a 1000 kms away in the middle of nowhere.
Rents do tend to be slightly higher however for recently built or renovated apartments. The Swedish rental system gives little benefit to those that choose to rent in the countryside.

C. Renting can often be cheaper than buying an apartment.

As you may know I have decided to remain in Sweden because of the new job. When I started looking for a flat I got an uneasy feeling because I had a problem finding anything. I looked on the all possible web pages, local paper’s and there was nothing.

Anyway an excellent free website to find something to rent anywhere in Sweden or to just look at costs is Blocket. I also want to add that finding a short term rental of a couple of months with a second-hand contract is not that difficult, it’s long term rentals that are the problem.

Basically in Sweden there are two forms of rental contract. A first hand contract which the tenant takes out directly with the owner of the property gives the tenant a high level of security. They can be fairly sure that they can continue to live in the property. But first hand contracts are scarce because apartments in many cities are scarce.

The second hand contract however is basically a sublet by someone who has a first hand contract and doesn’t want to loose it. Maybe there are going away on holiday, maybe they are working somewhere else for a while but often they are moving with no intention of ever coming back. You come across Swedes all the time who will tell you about some first hand contract they have on the other side of the country for an apartment they haven’t seen in years and which they have no intention of giving it up because…. well they are hard to get aren’t they! And only the clinically insane would relinquish a first hand contract in Stockholm (without a substantial cash payment that is).
A first hand contract in a desirable location is so hard to get, people will make an illegal under the table payment to get them ranging from 10,000SEK to much much more. In Stockholm it might cost 150,000SEK in black money to get a central one room apartment. On Blocket.se you find grainy digital pictures of unremarkable washing machines and the blunt question: ‘who will give me 30,000sek for my washing machine?’. Welcome to Sweden’s massive black economy .

One of the fastest way to find an apartment is just to post on blocket.se a short info about yourself, something like “Nice tall Moldavian seeks apartment…..everything of interest”. You can get lot of calls and rental proposals.
If you don’t choose this way, you can just keep sending your CV and picture and try to convince.

Another strange thing that happened was that I was rung up by a small property company who wanted to offer me a first hand contract. They checked me out and seemed happy and invited me to view the property. What I didn’t know is that I was invited along with about 20 other people. It was an annoying waste of time and illustrated how property companies feel they can create a ‘beauty contest’ out of unwitting participants.

So in conclusion my advice on renting an apartment in Stockholm is:

* Put an ad in the paper and see what comes up. You might get lucky.
* Don’t live in Stockholm unless you’ve got a really good salary and a lot of patience.
* If you have the right contacts in a property company, apartments can appear out of thin air.
* If you’ve got the money and plan to stay awhile then buy don’t rent.
* If you are offered any first hand contract, take it, it’s a bargaining chip.

After 3 months of unsuccessful apartment search my employer helped by contacting a real estate company. In the end they also find an interesting add on blocket.se. The employer really did a great job by convincing the owner of the apartment that Moldavians are nice guys and they don’t keep guns at home .

If you are so curious, the apartment is located in a very cosy area – Aspudden – just 10 minutes from the city center.

When talking about Sweden all the time somehow comes to my mind IKEA, Volvo, Saab, ABBA, blond girls, nature and why not modesty. It looks that after visiting some of the royal residences the word modesty is not the most appropriate for this selected Swedish family.

Below you’ll find some pictures with the castles/palaces owned by the Swedish royal family and believe me you won’t find inside any IKEA decoration .

Drottningholm Palace

The Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO´s World Heritage list. It is the most well-preserved royal castle built in the 1600s in Sweden and at the same time is representative of all European architecture for the period. The Palace is also the present Royal Family’s permanent residence. The rooms in the southern wing of the palace are reserved for this purpose. The rest of the palace and grounds are open to the public year round.

Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm is known as Gustav Vasa’s castle, since he decided to build the castle.

At Gripsholm you can take a royal stroll around the romantic castle grounds or meet the royal deer at the Hjorthagen nature reserve. Gripsholm Castle is also home to the oldest national portrait gallery in the world. It is also one of the largest, with around 4500 pieces, primarily oil paintings. The earliest portraits date from the late 15th century and the collection includes contemporary works.

Despite these nicely decorated locations, in Sweden there other nice destination like Vaxholm. Vaxholm is, despite its small population, for historical reasons normally still referred to as a city. According to Statistics Sweden, however, only localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants are counted as cities. The name Vaxholm comes from Vaxholm Castle, which was constructed for defense purposes, by King Gustav Vasa.

Time is passing by so fast that we don’t even realize how fast the seasons are changing, I still have the feeling that the university started yesterday:

From now, for the moment no more homeworks, no more assignments and ***ty essays .

The semester ended with the final presentation of the business project. The business project is an obligatory part of the CEMS MIM curriculum and is supposed to be a real life learning experience for students. Basically student teams solve a real business problem as a one-semester part-time activity tutored by the company and a professor in parallel. The project results are evaluated by an academic and corporate supervisors. Sounds quite easy, but when you have an academic supervisor like ******** P.O. it is just intolerable. For example in the official curriculum of the CEMS organization is said the we need to write a report of about 10-12 pages, but Sweden would be all the time an exception, and is better to write a report for at least 50 pages…never mind, the most important thing it was a great opportunity to meet new people, make friends, was really a very pleasant team to work with – I guess this is the most important factor when you do a project like this.

…good mood before the final presentation:
Emrick (France), Barbara (Austria), Gergely (Hungary), me (Moldova), Jakub (Sweden):

…maximum concentration before the presentation:

…I know it is not polite to show with finger

…and good mood after the final presentation

…all the negative energy and effort during the whole preparation was recompensed with some (you would think champagne) natural orange juice

When living abroad for a longer time it is impossible not to notice many strange things, which are sometimes really difficult to be described.

Now on the queue is Storkolm or Stockholm, which is probably the biggest city in Sweden, but nobody really knows. Over the years, it has garnered a reputation for its edibility, and the most famous kebab district.

Quite strange was how Swedish people celebrated their National day on 6th of June. Of course this holiday was celebrated only by Central part of Sweden, since those from North part consider themselves as part Antarctica and those from South consider themselves as part of Greenland. The first thing you notice during a national holiday in Sweden is the Americanized style of celebrating and the immense amount of flags with the similar colours of the Ukrainian flag.

I though Sweden is really a cold country with could people who don’t know how to celebrate an event and stay at home during the National holiday and watch some ABBA clips – wrong, very wrong. They really know how to celebrate their independence and it seems that their laws are not so rigorous:

Since it was very hot outside some sweet Swedes went to the woods to solve some family duties far away from paparazzi lenses, but of course they didn’t forget about the most important thing (Swedish flag):

Some of them decided for a romantic dinner or just went out for a beer with best friends :

…or just for a glass of selected wine : (please notice the Lidl shopping bag – again celebrating in the spirit of national colours)

Anyway it was a lovely day and even bears around enjoyed it:

I guess the best word, which describes the last week is spontaneous random adventure . It started with a peaceful Monday morning in Sweden, but ended with less peaceful late nights somewhere in the Baltic Sea

Monday – Tuesday

My responsibilities at my old new job are becoming more significant and more varied so that on Monday and Tuesday I was appointed as the official paparazzi of the that mysterious company . The only thing remains to increase the salary for this risky and hazardous job . Monday and Tuesday were really busy, full of meetings, quarterly reports and so on. I guess the purpose of these meetings is to accentuate that the main reason for being successful is not because we have a strong and tall CEO , but actually it’s because of us, every employee who is making the company more successful day by day. To motivate us for better results and to perceive this successful first quarter, our manager reserved a small boat and invited us to go for a short-long trip to a nice and lost island.

since it was a natural park, alcohol was forbidden and everybody respected this rull

Wednesday

after the boat trip on Tuesday and not drinking any alcohol you may imagine how motivated I was to work . Life is Sweden is so spontaneous and unpredicted, that I am not surprised anymore.
This time Mr. Mallon called me:
Mallon: hey Ion, what are your plans for the next 2 hours?
Ion: 2 hours or 2 days ?
Mallon: how about to take the ferry and go to Finland?
Ion: ohhhh no, again alcohol

The thing is, that most of the exchange students from SSE went on Wednesday on a trip to Finland, Baltic countries and Russia. However few students cancelled the trip, so some free tickets were in the air and without any modesty I took one and the opportunity to see the country of sailor men.

The cruise-ferry

The trip took around 15 hours and you got to see how younger people party together with senior citizens and also how they play the slot machines like they’re in Vegas.

Speaking about cruise-ferry it’s a new type of ship. The enormous demand for sea travel in the Baltic (approximately 15% growth in recent years) together with the ferocious competition between the existing lines has promoted the development of so called cruise-ferry. The English word “ferry” is used to designate a ship that allows passengers and vehicles to travel from one port to another. Ferry designers always try to increase the number of passengers and vehicles, and also improve the turnaround time (loading and unloading) and the crossing time. The factors previously mentioned (demand and competition) have made the atmosphere, the comforts and the leisure activities on board more and more necessary.

So, the ship itself has become a tourist destination as important as the two ports. This has allowed the operators to increase their revenues from passenger sales and services (duty free stores, foods, casinos, etc.). This represents up to 40% of the total revenue, allowing companies to lower, or at least maintain, present prices.

It is quite unlike anything I have seen before. Normally I tend to think that to be scenic an area must have significant undulation if not mountains. Here there are none. The islands are so low that a ship like the one we were on could be spotted even if there were two islands between us and it. It is the sheer number of islands and the immense sense of peace which give the voyage its character.

And now you may ask yourself, why 25 springs on 2 boats – yes you are right , somebody just turned 2,5 years and now has the official permission to buy alcohol without showing his birth certificate

It’s been a while since my assistant didn’t post anything here, so I should try improve this situation.
This time I’ll tell you a story about how is to be an employee in Sweden.

It started with a smile, then a warm “hello, how are you” and I then I told myself that’s all for the beginning. I thought it’s very typical way of welcoming a new colleague – a very tall one . However I was wrong, very wrong!

After 5 minutes of walking in the office and meeting almost 500 new colleagues I really understood how difficult is to be a president or a receptionist . Anyway was quite easy to remember them, since many people are foreigners and represent one certain country. Regarding the Swedish colleagues, was a little bit difficult, since everybody is relative with Mr. Ericsson, Karlsson and of course Johansson .

After explaining everybody and showing on the globe where the lovely Moldova is I decided to go next to the floor to introduce my self to the remaining 500 colleagues. Surprise ! They already know my name. I guess every employee receives in advance an e-mail that a new person is coming, something like this: “Dear all, please notice that we have a new colleague from Moldova, take into consideration that Moldova is not a GAME and it’s not a country from Balkans, so this time you may hide your guns” .

I guess the first small shock came when a person from the IT department apologized for the whole company that they didn’t manage to buy the need quantity of laptop bags, so temporary I am supposed to be satisfied with a back-pack. The second excuse came from the same department, but because of Sony Ericsson’s fault. They didn’t manage to delivery a cell phone for the only Moldavian in the company, can you imagine I was supposed to wait 1 day – 1 whole day . I don’t have the experience of working inside many companies, but this one is simply amazing . The way how fast the information travel from one department to another one simply surprises me.

Next pleasant surprise was my multifunctional working place. I don’t think that in every company you receive gifts, welcome letter and different useful things like good headphones Sennheiser, a real keyboard – so I am not supposed to wait for it 1 week as others did . I mentioned that the place is multifunctional – yeah, the table is electric and is adjustable. Maybe, it’s sounds funny for you, but for People Republic of Moldova this is completely high-tech .

You think this is enough, NO, of course not. Imagine you receive a big, nice bouquet of flowers on the 1st of April. You would say, yeah right “good joke guys”, but actually it’s from the same company, it’s just arrived a little bit late. This is the way how the company welcomes every employee.

More interesting is the way how the process of performance management is working inside the company. This process is done in such a friendly way that you even don’t realize that somebody is controlling and evaluating your performance. Also this is not the company where you are an expert in your figures and you have no clue of what is marketing, IT, HR department. We have so many meetings with people from the other departments so soon or late you really may become a CEO of company , because you almost understand how everything is working in the company.

Another way of how the company is trying to retain employees is to organize as many afterwork activities as possible. This is the best way how you can meet your boss, explain him the sense of “Where is Moldova” game, play some interactive games and if you have some problems with him, laser game is the best way how you may solve these issues :

<img height="270" width="202"src="http://images36.fotki.com/v1156/photos/8/882391/6015996/100_8208-vi.jpg" alt="" /><img height="270" width="202"src="http://images31.fotki.com/v1050/photos/8/882391/6015996/100_8209-vi.jpg" alt="" />

I was so pleasant surprised by how the HR department takes care of every employee that I decided to choose this company to do a project at the university. To project is about how important is to have a strong company culture in order to be a successful company and to have a 20% growth every year for the period of over 40 years!

That’s all for the moment and Happy Easter everybody!*

*-Christian Orthodoxy celebrate Easter this weekend

It is an exciting story stretching from the art pioneers of the 1950s to modern artistic experiments. Almost all stations have been adorned.

In some 90 of the 100 Metro stations, passengers can enjoy an exciting, beautiful and varied art experience in the form of sculptures, mosaics, paintings, installations, inscriptions, and reliefs.

Around 140 artists have helped to create this art along the Metro lines. An additional few hundred artists have added temporary art features.

Life standard and cost of living in Stockholm is quite high in comparison to Prague. When you are coming here your account shows few digits (in case you were working last summer ). Then you realize after 2 months that in order to enjoy your life at maximum here in Scandinavia, it’s a good idea to find a job.

I tried some part-time jobs, like serving as guardian, but it was really difficult to resist to make photos with every tourist

Finding a part-time job it’s not a easy thing. For some companies you need to speak Swedish, other companies want more flexibility. A good chance to meet representatives from different companies and to ask them for a part-time position is participating at business forums, which are organized at local universities.

So after an interview at Handelsgadarna (business forum for students) with the Global talent manager from one company I was invited to the next step: a couple of interviews with representatives from HR and Global Supply department of this company. After few days I got a positive feedback and the official invitation to join the company, so now for almost 3 weeks I am a proud employee of this company.

The company, where I work is today one of the world’s fastest-growing in their industry. It is present in 59 countries and is market leader in over 30 countries.
Company overview:
- 1,1 billion Euros in annual sales
- 6.200 employees

The interesting fact was that the day when I started, they were celebrating the headquarter’s transfer from Brussels to Stockholm, but I didn’t know about that. So everybody where making fun of me, that they prepared all this food and champagne only for me, because I am new and I they prepare this kind of welcome parties for every new employee .

Since making photos in the office and posting them is prohibited, I will not advertise the name of the company

After 2 weeks of no writing any posts and not having Internet here comes the boom as Mr. Mallon likes to say .

I shall start first of all with more culturally things and then end with less culturally attractions .

One place in Stockholm which is quoted with 5 stars in all the guides is Vasa Museet. The Vasa Museum is Scandinavia’s most visited museum. The Museum is so famous because of the warship Vasa – the only remaining, intact 17th century ship in the world.

Finally during this weekend I’ve managed to see changing of the guards at the Royal Palace, quite a funny thing:

Some other pictures I find interesting:

1 strange sign and 2 boys:

guess what’s this

Combining university life with my new job resulted in 3-4 hours of sleeping per day (more detailes about the new job in the new post). In order to shorten this long time I decided to do a short visit to Älmhult. Actually the visit wasn’t so short, since this place is about 500km far from Stockholm. The best solution was to take a X2000, which is kind of Swedish Maglev Train:

The number 2000 is not average speed, it’s in fact the number of seconds after the train broke . This really happened after about 300 km far from Stockholm. Since I was close to miss my interview I asked the train conductor how far was Älmhult. He was so kind and answered that actually they don’t plan to stop there, since it’s a very small and unimportant village. Then he remembered that SJ (Swedish railways) is obliged to cover all the expanses for passengers in case of delays. I was really pleasant surprised when he said they will stop in Älmhult only because of me

Älmhult is a small village with about 8,518 people (including me ), which is famous because here for the first time Ingvar Kamprad opened his first IKEA store and since then here it’s located IKEA’a headquarter. I decided to visit Älmhult not only because of my interview with the company mentioned before, but also to see how looks a typical Swedish village.

Another boom was a nice trip to Swedish Faroe Islands .
Ratana (Switzerland), Thomas (Germany) and Henneke (Netherlands) decided to celebrate their birthday together somewhere out Stockholm and they made a good decision. We went to a cabin in Saltsjobaden which is property of the Student Association at SSE
The cabin is not so far from Stockhom, but when you arrive there the only thing which comes to your mind is WoW :

People living there really enjoy their lives. Everything is so natural and untouched by people, silence all around and just the breeze of the sea.
But when the exchange students are coming , the atmosphere and the magic silence is being replaced by ….hm.. let’s say international workshops and of course the music of nature by the music from the modern Ipods:

…encouraging and supporting for better results

…singing the Swedish anthem :

…making a family picture:

Rising and setting times show interesting numbers for the next days and finally I have the opportunity to see what looks like the so called – Sun :

Today, at long last, the sun decided to grant us a bit of attention, so finally no more black/white pictures:

Now I can enjoy making new pictures with the blue-blue sky and those from Milan may envy us :

During the last week I didn’t participate at any global events, so as usually I spent a simple, unglamourous student’s life.
Life at university is an every day exam. We meet new people, face new challenges and if we want some pages at the end of the book with all the right answers – we have to write them ourselves.

The most Wau thing I’ve seen during the last week was maybe the Stockholm Public Library (oh no, again books ).

The library is really something amazing in the way how it looks and is built. The first time when you see it, you may assume, that it’s a prison for bad students from Stockholm School of Economics :

The architect’s name also is a little bit ghostlike: GUNNAR ASPLUND

The name Stockholm Public Library is today used for both: the main library as well as the municipal library system of the City of Stockholm. It includes more than 2 million volumes and 2.4 million audio tapes, CDs and audio books.

So, welcome inside the Stockholm Public Library

(this is far the most astonishing panorama)

Having still the same difficulties to spend my first scholarship I’ve decided this time to check for some student’s discounts at a more affordable mark:

You may guess that I didn’t like the colour, so I’m still confused what car to buy. Anyway on the way to Audi showroom, had the chance to see some nice local boats:

Yesterday the City of Stockholm and the Stockholm County Council had the pleasure of my company at a reception with buffet at Stadshuset (City Hall).

(this picture was attached to the invitation, so I suppose I have all the rights to post it on my commercial blog )

I suppose, that they organized this event in order to bring together all the international students and guest researchers and not because of future elections of the local mayor . Anyway it was a great honour to be invited by mayor in the same hall, where the Nobel Prize Banquet takes place.

In my travel guide is stated that Stadshuset (City Hall) is one of the best examples of modern architecture in Europe. The picture above shows how beautiful the building is and how it fits into the rest of the architecture in Stockholm. What makes Stadshuset extraordinary, however, is the interior. There are two courtyards, one uncovered, called the Blue Hall, which is actually Brown and one covered, called the Golden Hall.

The Blue Hall of the Stockholm City Hall was supposed to be painted blue, but the architect changed his mind when he saw the beautiful red brick walls. Although he decided to not cover the brick with blue plaster, he kept the name Blue Hall since it was found on all the plans of the building. The Blue Hall is the City Hall’s largest room, and the Nobel Prize Banquet takes place here on December 10 every year. On this occasion, around 1,300 guests enjoy the Nobel Dinner, listen to the toasts and speeches and witness the evening’s entertainment. The Blue Room also has one of Northern Europe’s largest organs with over 10,000 pipes and 138 stops.

Then there is the incredible Golden Hall: a huge room with walls entirely covered with handmade mosaics (18 million pieces). Formed from gold foil pressed between two layers of glass, the Golden Hall is truly golden, and the warm glow makes the room intimate despite the vast size. The mosaic figures on the walls represent important events in Sweden and the world.

The City Hall is not so far from the Main bus/train station, but because it’s located on the next island it’s a little bit complicated to get there. Since we were going for the first time, none of us knew the right directions. So we played a little bit the game “sheep-man and all the sheep following him” . Anyway after some 10 minutes all the students were at the destination, somebody took the taxi, others crossed the highway, more brave ones swam .

The reception was well prepared including short welcome speech (excepts Richard’s ):

…tasty food…

food enough for 700 hungry students :

Just a simple question for those who were there, have you read the descriptions of dishes, which were in front of each plate I doubt that you did .

and as usually Moritz was the hungriest one

As I see Kim liked the sausages and Andrea as a proud Italian was degustating some pure Swedish wine:

Armen finally bought a suit and as usually showed his Spanish passion for every friend:

Anyway was a nice evening with nice people:

and I hope next time they will provide some ABBA songs, because Gergely and Christina were very much looking forward to dancing :

For decades, Sweden’s liquor stores were few and far. They closed by 6 on weekdays and never opened on weekends. Choice was limited and prices high. Bottles were displayed inside glass cases. Customers took numbers – and waited.
These measures were imposed to discourage the consumption of alcohol in a nation with a tradition of drinking to the point of drunkenness and a history of abuse going back to the miseries of 19th-century industrialization, when cheap liquor led to widespread abuse.

But piece by piece, Sweden is the motherland of rules not only regarding alcohol and anti-alcohol policies. Actually these rules and policies violate the European Union’s rules of fair competition. These kind of measures, rules, limitations I found not only within alcohol industry.

During my 2 weeks in Sverige I concluded that Sweets… sorry Swedes have many rules, too many – and maybe this is good in order to have a high level of living, respect in the society and bla bla bla.

Strange rules, restrictions and prohibition signs are everywhere, in front of the school, kindergarten, night clubs, below my bed, in front of my door and even in front of McDonald’s (which is supposed to represent the place of all possibilities) :

Restriction measures as it was expected are also in the clubs, more explicitly in front of the clubs, because we didn’t get the chance to visit many of them. It’s difficult to say why they do this (bodyguards usually don’t allow exchange students inside), maybe because we don’t “Pratar/talar Svenska”, or maybe we are not too blond. On thing is clear, exchange students make a lot of troubles and the bodyguards represent some 0,0134 % of the total population, so it’s OK to have some black sheep in the country .

Restriction measures are not only in front of school, you can find them also inside … the Stockholm School of Economics and inside its system.
I will just state few examination rules at SSE:

You must take the seat assigned to you!

Please note that if you are not registered for the course you will not be allowed to take the exam.

It is not permitted to re-sit an exam that you have already passed.

Only students with a valid identity document have the right to enter the examination hall and take the exam.

Students without proper identification are advised to register for the next scheduled examination.

A student who fails to provide proper identification, but somehow manages to write the exam, will not receive a grade for that exam.

Taking an exam without proper identification papers is considered a used exam opportunity and will be registered as a Fail.

A valid identity document is: Driver’s license, Passport, Student ID from your home – no relatives ID

You can be up to 30 minutes late for the exam and still be let in. However, no one is allowed to leave the examination hall earlier than 30 minutes after the start of the exam.

Toilet visits are allowed, but only after the first 30 minutes.

You are NOT allowed to walk out to buy food and drink from the cafeteria during the exam.

Bags, handbags and cases are allowed into the examination halls, but they have to be placed within an assigned area.

You may not bring the following equipment into the exam hall or when you use the bathroom: mobile phone (keep it switched off and in your bag or where the invigilator asks you to put it, alternatively you leave it at home), minicall, handheld, Mp3-players/walkman, agenda.

You must stop writing when the invigilator announces that the writing time is over. A student who continues to write despite of the invigilators request will not get his/her exam marked.

Calculators may be permitted, however just only one type : Casio FX- 82S : (good business for Casio)

As a recommendation from ClaraMy I will try to update my blog every day, but actually she forgot to specify every day of the week, month or year ?! .
I’ll try to do my best, but I think I need a qualified journalist for writing articles, so if you know somebody who meets the following qualifications let him/her to contact my personal assistant :

• Master’s degree with strong academic results
• Excellent analytical and quantitative skills
• Advanced technical skills
• Structured, accurate with ability to take initiative
• Able to take responsibility and work under pressure
• Flexible and good team spirit
• Fluency in English, Swedish, Malay and Khmer.
• Preferably blond relatives.

After I encountered some difficulties to spend my first scholarship I’ve decided to check for some student discounts at MPH – an exhibition with interesting cars and interesting prices in Nacka Strand.

At MPH I met again those nice people from so-called the capital of Scandinavia.
Anyway there are few difference between this kind of exclusive exhibition which is organized in Stockholm as well in Prague:

1. Almost all the cars where opened, which is good for us (visitors), but not for the the dealers/owners: after 6 hours the seats in the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series were too black , the white seats in Audi S5 were not anymore white.

2. The cigar lighters are not removed by organizers as in Prague, because in Stockholm Län nobody is stealing.

Few pictures from the exhibition:

More pictures are available here .

Later on, my lovely buddies ClaraMy and Paula invited me to join for a short trip to Moderna Museet.

So 2 experts next to a beginner in modern arts took their pencils and paper to criticize Other Voices, Other Rooms by Andy Warhol :

Firstly we tried to analyze the ambiance, room temperature (very important factors for an expert!):

In order to understand Andy’s masterpieces we tried to be on his place :

Finally I’ve received my scholarship from our lovely European Union and is time to do some shopping.
Maybe I’ll follow Gergelly’s way of spending the first scholarship For this reason I’ve decide to visit the closest car showroom, which was Bentley Stockholm – a nice showroom full of German cars, ohh sorry British .

Frankly I was not planning to go inside the showroom, because at the entrance door was very obviously written, that they don’t provide any discount on ISIC student card.
Surprisingly somebody the door and invited me inside…I lost my voice for a few seconds…confused I am asking the salesman: “me???!!!!”, very friendly he repeated once again: “Yes, please step inside, take a look, if you want you can make some pictures” . I just couldn’t accept this offer and went inside the showroom…and first impression was Wau :

shall I leave my boots outside :

From my previous experience of visiting a Bentley showroom in Prague I thought that the first condition of stepping inside the showroom is wearing an АРМАНЫ or ГУЧЧИ suit, which I don’t have, but here…Swedes are quite cold, but still so nice and hospitable. After spending almost 2 hours inside and outside the showroom, here are the results:
